On Friday 3 May there were still a lot of people who had not been seen to at Home Affairs in Caledon at closing time. Many of them had spent their last money travelling from outlying areas to collect their IDs or get temporary IDs so that they could vote on the 8th of May. They tried to explain that they would not be able to return again on Monday or Tuesday and would not leave Home Affairs until they had all been attended to. Home Affairs called SAPS who asked the people to leave. They again refused to leave until they had been attended to. A private security company was then called by SAPS or Home Affairs and the people were escorted off the premises at gun point.
What is happening in our country if the South African Police Service are constantly calling private security companies to assist them?
What is happening in our country when, just a few days before a National election, faced with this situation, public servants are unable to think out of the box and find solutions when faced with an unexpected challenge?
What is happening in our country when the only solution public servants could think of in this situation was to bring in guns?
What is happening in our country when something like this happens in a small town that is still reeling from the shock of losing 2 community members at the hands of either SAPS or private security?
Surely there is another solution?
Where are our leaders? How can citizens doing everything they can to vote in a National election be forced out of a government office at gunpoint?
Please think about this when you cast your vote. It is time for some serious change. It is time to reform and open up every single government institution and state owned enterprise and get them doing what they're supposed to be doing and serve the people.
