The captors of Shiraaz Mohamed, a South African photo-journalist captured in Syria 27
months ago, have demanded a ransom of $1.5 million (R21.521 million) to secure his
release. This has been confirmed by Dr Imtiaaz Sooliman, founder of the South African relief organisation, Gift of the Givers, who has been negotiating with the group of captors to secure Shiraaz Mohamed’s release.
In a proof of life video sent to the relief organisation last week, Mohamed appeals to Dr
Imtiaaz Sooliman, his family and friends, Cyril Ramaphosa and the international community to assist in securing his release. Dr Imtiaaz Sooliman is desperate to convey to the captors that Mohammed’s family do not have this kind of funding and that the amount is unrealistically high. With Mohamed still being kept alive after all this time, Dr Sooliman is optimistic of finding a solution and Gift of the Givers is working closely with the International Relations department to secure the photographer’s release and plot a path home for him.
Land Party supports a free press and stands alongside Gift of The Givers in their bid to
assist in the release of Shiraaz Mohamed. We demand that the president intervenes urgently, after more than two years of inactivity.
The Land Party will always support and uphold journalists’ freedom and ensure their safety.
