JP Maya a compromised candidate

The Land Party has registered it's objection with the Judicial Services Council to the candidacy of JP Maya for the position of Chief Justice on the basis of her lack of impartiality and unethical conduct in conspiring with the EFF to tarnish the image of DCJ Zondo and thus clear the way for her appointment as CJ.

The Land Party has pointed out to the JSC that:

a) Candidate Maya did not make full disclosure of her intimate relationship with a commissioner, Adv Mpofu. She has thus made herself guilty of dishonesty and unethical conduct and is not suited for the position of CJ.

b) Maya did not disclose her close relationship with a political party, the EFF and her recent meeting with them in the Eastern Cape, notably with Adv Mpofu and and Adv Notyesi.

c) Adv Mpofu, as a profiled member of the EFF promised and did lobby other members of the JSC to support Maya.

d) The Land Party has reliably learnt that at the EC meeting a plot to level false sexual harassment allegations against Zondo was disclosed to clear the way for Maya's appointment.

e)Maya would thus not reinforce the independence of the judiciary but as a political appointment who would clearly serve the parochial interests of the EFF and not the people of SA.

Her impartiality, critical for the role of a CJ, is thus highly questionable.

The Land Party received information that Maya met Mpofu and the EFF in the Eastern Cape and that they conspired to lobby for her appointment together with the ANC RET faction.

Allegations of her intimate relationship with Mpofu was supported by Mpofu's half hearted and partial admission of a sexual relationship with her as students.

It is clear that Mpofu's participation in the interview is also problematic and that he should have recused himself from the interviews altogether. His failure to do so has tainted the interview process itself.

The plot to make false allegations against Zondo is credible given that these allegations surfaced and were mentioned during his interview.

It is for these reasons that the Land Party strongly believes, in the long term, that the JSC should be composed of independent and qualified legal people and citizens of good standing rather than by high profile political party representatives should we as a nation wish to have a truly independent judiciary.

The evidence of Maya's compromised position, unethical conduct and blatant political party bias is available and can be verified by an inexpensive and speedy investigation.

The people of South Africa deserve this much!

Race and Gender in itself is not transformative and sufficient if not accompanied by a flawless character.

The Land Party calls for Maya's disqualification and if needs be a reconstitution of the JSC with persons of expertise and integrity.
