Sandvlei holds historic origins for being one of the oldest communities in the Western Cape. Despite the early origin of the Sandvlei community, residents are still living without basic services. They have had to make do with the little resources they have to make outhouses for the ablution needs of community members. Since the founding of the Sandvlei United Community Organisatio (SUCO) working hand-in-hand with Land Party, the needs of the people of Sandvlei have been identified and are being fought for daily.
The executive team of SUCO and the Land Party will not rest until the community of Sandvlei are able to enjoy their basic human rights. We will and already have fought through many obstacles, such as financial strains, discrimination and sabotage, for basic services for the Sandvlei community. This includes standpipes for families without internal plumbing as well as toilets.
Recently we fought for and succeeded in getting almost 50 toilets for the community, changing the lives of more than 60 families. When we communicated with the families in need of toilets we listened to their life stories. An old man explained to us that he has been living without a decent toilet his entire life. It is a shame that it took this long to finally regain some dignity. Another resident suffered from a severe stroke and we were able to assist and make life a bit more convenient for him.
The saddest situation was that of a girl aged nine who went for a 12 hour spinal surgery in December 2018. Her surgery was successful but her life changed dramatically. Schooling became a big obstacle and living without electricity and running water made it even harder on her and her family. We managed to provide their family with a toilet to lighten their struggle and are still valiantly fighting for the other services.
Thank You Team SUCO!
