A year ago, just before South Africa’s National 2019 Elections, a community from a small town on the Southern-most tip of Africa who felt they had no political home, registered a political party. The party was crowd-funded by the members. Members made up of the poor and the working class, frustrated with ineffective leaders who were out of touch with the community’s needs.
Leaders of the Land Party are ordinary people like chefs, security guards, domestic workers, small business owners and unemployed people; they are not politicians. In a very short time, under the guidance of Gcobani Ndzongana (who had some experience in the political world), they waded their way through a political landscape that is a veritable swamp, dodged the dirty tricks of seasoned politicians and the conditional bribes of wealthy businessmen, devised a pragmatic manifesto and went on to win several of their local wards.
This community and their supporters from across South Africa have, over the last 12 months, had a political education of note. Ordinary working-class people have established a people-driven party and established an official platform where everyone is looked after and 100% equal in all respects. Despite the challenges, which were harrowing at times, it is now one year later and the party stands consolidated, strong and ready for local elections in 2021.
The Land Party invites you to join them in Zwelihle at 10am on Saturday 7th March 2020 to celebrate the accomplishment of these citizens. The event will be commemorated by handing over the keys to a house that members have just finished building for a family whose home was destroyed after being driven into by a SAPS vehicle last year. This house is a physical manifestation of the people-centred, together-we-can philosophy that lies in the heart of every Lander.
