Land Party condemns the use of live ammunition by taxi drivers in Zwelihle

Protest is the only voice the poor have. It is also a constitutional right. Today, Tuesday 3rd September 2019, the people of Zwelihle decided to protest against the incarceration and the subsequent postponement of the bail hearing of 2 community leaders by calling for a stayaway. 

We are outraged that their voices were silenced, not only by SAPS and their teargas and rubber bullets, but also by taxi drivers who saw fit to shoot live ammunition at them. This is completely unacceptable. We cannot have live ammunition being fired randomly in residential areas, especially at the time when most children were on their way to school, no matter whether they are law enforcement or civilians. It is a very sad day when people who have managed to better their lives forget where they come from and forget the plight of those they ‘leave behind’ all for the sake of money.

Worse still is the praise they receive for keeping the masses of poor people, who have been waiting for service delivery from the local municipality for decades, quiet. Are SAPS and the taxi drivers now in cahoots? Are they being paid by the capitalists to ensure that it is ‘business as usual’? 

The events that played out in Zwelihle, Hermanus this morning are outrageous. SAPS working with armed civilians to stop a protest using live ammunition is indicative that there is something far more sinister at play. It has become obvious that the corrupt are working together to silence those who’s poverty they rely on to remain rich.

If anyone thinks that the struggle of the people is about race, today proved them wrong. This is a revolution of the poor and the working class who have once again been silenced by the wealthy because it does not suit them or their pockets. We can only hope that they remember Jean Jacques Rousseau warning that "When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich."
