During today’s protest action for land and housing in Caledon, two lives were lost and another four people have been seriously injured. The Caledon deaths are an absolute disgrace and travesty of justice and the ANC/DA alliance in the Western Cape must take responsibility for failing to adequately protect legitimate protesters.
It has been reported, although not yet verified that gunfire was opened on the protesters causing a stampede of people trying to flee the gunshots. It is alleged that in the stampede two people were trampled to death and four others badly injured. It has also, however, just been reported by a reputable news agency that the two people were shot dead by the police.
We are following the reports and in contact with the community in Caledon to get to the bottom of the issues currently developing.
Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the families of the comrades that lost their lives today in the struggle for land and a life with dignity.
Something needs to change, comrades. We need radical intervention to protect the lives of South African citizens and to restore the imbalances of the past. And we need it NOW.
