The Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) has applied to the Equality Court for an order declaring the gratuitous display of the official flag of the old apartheid South Africa to be constituted as hate speech and unfair discrimination based on race.
Land Party is a non-racial political party and opposes all discriminatory actions, standing along-side the NMF in their application. We reject the application made by AfriForum to oppose the ruling.
AfriForum, a reluctant respondent in this matter, argue that the display of the flag does not comply with their definition of hate speech whilst the NMF debates that gratuitous display of the old flag does nothing to advance social justice and human dignity in South Africa.
Land Party respects and appreciates history and memory but not at the expense of human dignity and agrees that displays of the old flag should not be protected by the constitution or be defended in the name of tolerance.
