Truck Driver Protest Closed N7

On Sunday we witnessed truck drivers blockading N1 near Kraaifontein, making demands which range from their conditions of service, employment of foreign nationals, and issues relating to professional driving permits.

There is a lack of clarity in regulations with regard to foreign nationals making use of Professional Driving Permits issued in their respective countries to drive in South Africa.

On Wednesday, 27 October 2021, transport minister Fikile Mbalula said the parties had reached an agreement with protesting drivers, while long-term solutions were sought. This is as good as an empty agreement in the light of 15 South African truck drivers being arrested yesterday for protesting.

The Land Party is committed to support these truck drivers for taking the stand of unjust treatment of fellow South Africans and ensuring similar interventions, which also affects other broader sectors. The truck drivers who were arrested are appearing in the Kraaifontein Magistrates Court today, 8th February 2022. Comrades are encouraged to avail themselves to show support and solidarity for our comrades, the truck drivers who were arrested on Sunday.
