LAND Party condemns the irresponsible behaviour of the MEC of education of the Western Cape for undermining the national minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshega, and causing added confusion in the province by declaring schools opened.
Gazetted or not, the National minister gave a clear directive, albeit at the 11th hour which Ms Schaffer ignored. This kind of behaviour must never be tolerated.
The LAND Party calls on the Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshega, to take its advice and listen to the cry of parents and pupils who are asking schools to be open in January 2021.
LAND Party advises that the Minister of Basic Education meet with UMALUSI and design a special matric certificate for 2020, a certificate that will cater for all students and give them 60% pass mark across the board. Those who want marks above 60% should do an aptitude test of 100 marks. The test must be general knowledge about the year 2020.
The opening of schools, just like the opening of liquor stores, will be detrimental to fight our common enemy, COVID-19. We ask the minister of Basic Education and the government to rethink its strategy to ease the Lockdown.
